Outcome
Although the project initially focused on reimagining a design studio, as the project developed, it became evident that our model applies to any discipline and industry that emphasizes innovation and collaboration to optimize output.

Instead of demanding users to adapt to the space, the space should accommodate user needs and wants. Through our transformation, we expect to cultivate a reciprocal relationship between users and their workspace, in which the users feel empowered to alter the space, and the space supports the users functionally and emotionally.
Expected Shift

Static > Dynamic
An evolving workspace that adapts to different needs

Operable > Optimal
The space should not only provide basic functionality but also augment user experience

Passive > Active
A shift of control from designers to users, giving users full autonomy

Shared Room > My Space
Foster a sense of ownership, making users feel empowered and valued
Benefits
for the Users
Personal Workspace
Power to customize the space to their preferences and needs.
A Sense of Belonging
With more control over the space, the users enjoy a sense of ownership, feeling more trusted and valued.
for the Firm
Less Square Footage
A flexible space requires less space than traditional layouts.
Enhanced Productivity
Facilitate freer communication and collaboration while stimulating creativity.
Discovery
Context
As work becomes increasingly collaborative, universities, many of which were originally planned and designed to support individual concentrated work, need to adapt. This project provides a strategic proposal to help Cornell University reimagine an aspect of its campus to better support new and emerging ways of learning.
Problem Statement
In the modern, fast-paced work environment, work is no longer linear –– people are constantly working on different teams for different tasks. Work has become fluid while the space remains static.

Reality: Static
users switch between different tasks that require different set-ups
Expectation: Dynamic
The studio is a unique learning space that, unlike traditional classrooms, has to accommodate various activities, yet, such needs are not spatially supported.
Opportunity
How might we re-designed studio space to better support the different needs of different users?
Trends Analysis
To better understand the relevance of this problem in the broader context, we conducted trends analysis, examining its significance and relevance in the next decade.

Response
Outcome
Work is Becoming Fluid
While work has become fluid, the space remains static
Users Demand Control
Gen Z demands control... they love to customize what’s in front of them
Agile Work
Maximize productivity and empower users to choose where and how they work
Autonomy Support
Give users an unprecedented amount of autonomy and control over their workspace
Creativity, Cohesion, Empowerment
Stimulate creativity; foster communication and collaboration; and empower users to increased user satisfaction
Concept
Inspiration: Stage Drama
In a drama, the space on the stage is fixed, with limited props, yet the different configurations of boxes, lighting, props, and furniture can effectively convey changes in time and space. Despite the same materials on stage, the atmosphere changes dramatically, affecting both the actors and the audience. In other words, even though we know that the theater doesn’t physically change, we perceive it as if the stage has transformed into all kinds of environments and traveled through a journey according to the story.

Transformable Studio
A flexible, multi-functional space that transforms to what the users need
Users

Hand Over Control
Designers should encourage users to control and create their preferred workspace
Build Autonomy
Shift the user attitude from passive to active, cultivating a sense of ownership over the space
Celebrate Inclusion
Recognize and support diverse user groups with different needs to maximize well-being.
Altering the space in according to one’s needs

Transformable Studio
A Reciprocal Process
Supports users functionally & emotionally

Modular & Flexible
Furniture should invite change and enocurage interaction

Build Autonomy
Give users opportunities to adjust and discover what works

Celebrate Inclusion
From embracing different needs to actively supporting and fulfilling them.

Recommendations
Tier One: Spatial
Applying the “Transformable Studio” model to a real studio space, we created our own “box of props,” providing essential parts that form a functional modern classroom. The number and types of the products are for illustration purposes and will be adjusted depending on the specific situation.

Vision

Modular & Flexible
A grid system formed by wall, flooring, and/or ceiling that accepts different types of “plug-ins” to achieve multiple functionalities.
IoT Surfaces
Digital surfaces that respond to user behaviors, creating a virtual and limitless layer to the existing space.
The Z-Axis
The vertical space that is accessible to users through flexible building structure, expanding the sense of control to a higher level.
Tier Two: User Empowerment
We aim to gradually educate the users and invite them to be co-makers of the space.
1. Inform the Opportunity
In this phase, we aim to raise awareness about the opportunity and freedom to manipulate the Transformable Studio or other spaces utilizing the same model, handing control over to the users.

2. Assist the Process
Recognizing potential reluctance to manipulate the spaces, we emphasize simplicity, making the reconfiguration process fun and rewarding while fostering user autonomy in managing their spaces. Over time, the users will be comfortable arranging the space to their preferences.

3. Kindle Desire
It is insufficient to merely hand over the control and give them instructions when the users do not desire or intend to manipulate or access the space. Therefore, it is critical to kindle intrinsic motivation to use the space. Through visual appeals and physical experiences, we will draw people to our solution. In addition to allowing people to realize the advantage of the space, this strategy is critical in overcoming any remaining reluctance or concerns regarding the amount of effort necessary for manipulation.

Implications
Through Tier 2 Recommendations, we elevate to helping our users adopt a more active role in their spatial interactions. This is significant in allowing them to take control of their spaces and optimize their well-being. Rather than demanding people to adapt, spaces are now adapting to users. Inclusiveness is not merely about embracing different needs but actively supporting these needs and fulfilling them.
