ENSO is the adaptive reuse of the Hickey Freeman Building in Rochester, NY. Recognizing Rochester’s identity as the Flower City and embracing its deep-rooted history of segregation and wealth disparities, this project seeks to revive the neighborhood area by leveraging the city’s vibrant tourist industry, which attracts approximately 1.5 million visitors annually. To do so, the project proposes repositioning and adapting the building for a multi-use facility, including a hotel and an experiential gardening club for visitors. The building will be transformed into an introspective focal point in its less well-off, racially diverse neighborhood, attracting people into and reviving the area.
